Self Clinching Fasteners
Clinch nuts, or press-in nuts, are internally threaded self-clinching fasteners engineered to create permanent, reusable attachment points in thin-gauge sheet metal. When pressed into a pre-sized hole, their serrated or knurled under-head features bite into the host material to provide superior torsional resistance, while the cold-flowing metal locks the nut against axial push-out forces. By eliminating the need for secondary tapping or welding operations, these fasteners streamline the assembly of telecommunications enclosures, automotive interior structural panels, and HVAC housings.
Clinch nuts, also known as press-in nuts or self-clinching nuts, are highly specialized internally threaded fasteners engineered to create permanent, reusable attachment points in thin-gauge sheet metal. When pressed into a precisely pre-sized hole using parallel squeezing force, their knurled or serrated under-head features bite into the host material. This forces the displaced metal to cold-flow into an engineered undercut groove on the fastener. Because self-clinching relies on the fastener being harder than the host material, clinch nuts are constructed from durable metals. Common materials include Carbon Steel and Stainless Steel, specifically 300 Series and A286 grades.
To prevent corrosion and ensure compatibility with various host panels, these nuts are supplied with several industrial finishes. Zinc Plated and Electro Zinc Plating are standard for carbon steel variants. Stainless steel clinch nuts typically feature Natural, Passivated, or Passivated per ASTM A380 finishes, which clean the surface and enhance the metal's innate corrosion resistance.
The performance of a clinch nut is heavily dependent on its design type and the hardness of the sheet metal it is installed into. Common types include Type S (typically carbon steel), Type CLS (300-series stainless steel), and Type SP (PEM 300®), which is specially engineered for harder stainless steel sheets. Sheet hardness requirements dictate that standard Type S and CLS nuts be used in materials of HRB 80 or less, while Type SP can handle hardness up to HRB 90.
Critical mechanical properties evaluated in these fasteners include Push-out Resistance and Torque-Out Resistance. Clinch nuts can feature either non-locking or self-clinching (free-running) internal threads, accommodating Metric, Unified National Coarse (UNC), and Unified National Fine (UNF) thread types. Production and finishing standards strictly follow ASTM A276 for stainless material properties, ASTM A380 for passivation, and ASTM B633 for zinc plating.
